The Role
What You’ll Do
As a Controls and Firmware Engineer at Transaera, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and optimizing the embedded systems that drive our cutting-edge energy-efficient technology. Your work will span a wide array of tasks, from developing low-level firmware for embedded devices to implementing advanced control algorithms for system integration. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the seamless operation of our products in real-world environments. Key responsibilities include:
- Architecture Development: Design robust software architecture for controlling industrial systems, such as HVAC systems. Migrating from prototyping systems to production level embedded hardware and software.
- Firmware Development: Design and implement firmware for embedded controllers in our products, ensuring high performance, reliability, and power efficiency.
- Controls Algorithm Design: Develop and refine control algorithms that optimize system performance, including sensor data processing, real-time control loops, and adaptive algorithms.
- System Integration: Work alongside hardware engineers to integrate firmware and control systems with the overall product architecture, ensuring smooth interaction between software and hardware components.
- Testing & Validation: Develop testing protocols and tools to validate the functionality and performance of firmware and control systems in various operating conditions, using both hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and real-world testing environments.
- Optimization: Continuously analyze and optimize control systems for performance, energy efficiency, and system robustness, using data collected from both lab and field testing.
- Collaboration: Partner with product, hardware, and software engineering teams to translate customer needs and product requirements into functional, reliable control and firmware solutions.
- Documentation & Reporting: Create detailed technical documentation, including design specs, test reports, and troubleshooting guides, to support development, deployment, and future enhancements.

Required Skills And Experience
- 8-10 yrs of experience developing robust firmware architecture for industrial devices
- 3+ yrs experience leading and managing a team
- Embedded hardware development platforms (ie. Particle)
- Embedded firmware programming using C, C++ or other customer languages
- Deep understanding of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus and CAN and industrial interfaces such as RS-232 and RS-485
- Integration of industrial sensors (0-10V, 4-20mA, PWM) and protocols such as SPI or I2C
- Integration of electromechanical actuators and drives (BLDC motors, solenoids, servos)
- Wireless Protocols such as, LoRa
- Configuring and using data acquisition hardware such as National Instruments DAQ
- Writing software to simulate hardware or to collect and analyze test data
- Summarizing and presenting information to customers, peers and management
- Experience with LabVIEW is a plus
- Experience with Particle Development Platform
- Experience working with Python
