Description

Build the data infrastructure that powers grid intelligence for the largest utilities in North America, working directly with exceptional engineering teams to architect solutions that matter.

We are seeking a Senior Technical Product Manager - Data Platform to own our data platform evolution as we scale transmission optimization solutions for Fortune 500 utilities. You'll drive platform architecture decisions spanning deployment models, data pipeline efficiency, system scalability, and enterprise security, partnering hands-on with Data Engineering, Platform Engineering, and DevOps teams to make critical architectural decisions. If you have a strong engineering background, love building platforms alongside developers, and want high-impact ownership in mission-critical infrastructure, join us at LineVision, Built In Best Places to Work!

What will you do?

Core Responsibilities and Key Performance Objectives

  • Own the product roadmap for LineVision's data platform, driving architectural decisions that balance cloud and on-prem deployment strategies to meet utility customer requirements
  • Make critical technical trade-offs in partnership with Data Engineering, Platform Engineering, DevOps, SRE, and QA teams—your engineering background enables you to go deep on architecture, performance, and scalability
  • Lead technical discussions with architects and senior developers on data pipeline design, containerization strategies, deployment models, and system architecture—holding your own in complex technical conversations
  • Navigate utility customer security review processes, translating operational constraints and compliance requirements into concrete technical specifications
  • Drive platform modernization initiatives, evolving from monolithic architecture toward modular, scalable systems that support multiple deployment models

Within the first 3 months:

  • Partner with Data Engineering and Platform Engineering teams to finalize technical architecture and requirements for containerized on-prem deployment
  • Conduct discovery with utility customers to document on-prem deployment requirements, IT constraints, security protocols, and compliance needs
  • Establish success metrics and reporting framework for data platform initiatives, providing regular updates to VP of Product and engineering leadership

Within the first 6 months:

  • Deliver containerized deployment architecture supporting both cloud and on-prem models with feature parity roadmap
  • Lead technical trade-off discussions on data pipeline design, storage strategies, and API architecture—making decisions and driving consensus
  • Launch beta on-prem deployment at initial customer site, coordinating with PMO and TPM on implementation

Within the first year:

  • Achieve production on-prem deployments meeting customer deadlines and commitments
  • Drive data pipeline efficiency improvements and platform modernization initiatives supporting future product capabilities
  • Build trusted relationships with customer IT and operations teams, establishing LineVision as a strategic partner in their grid modernization initiatives

How to succeed in this role

Key Competencies

  • Critical Thinking - Analyze data infrastructure problems independently and propose solutions. Demonstrate curiosity in exploring new approaches.
  • Stakeholder Management - Navigate complex utility customer environments, managing relationships with IT teams, operations stakeholders, and procurement organizations. Provide clear, concise updates appropriate for diverse audiences.
  • Judgment & Decision Making - Make informed product decisions balancing technical trade-offs, customer requirements, security constraints, and business priorities. Understand how architecture choices cascade through deployment models, customer operations, and long-term platform capabilities.
  • Follow Through - Execution - Deliver quality products on time despite competing priorities and technical complexity. Hold self and teams accountable to milestones.

Essential Skills

  • Engineering Background (Required) - 4-6 years hands-on software, data, or systems engineering building production systems. You've written code, debugged production issues, and built reliable platforms at scale.
  • Platform Product Management - 3-5 years owning data platforms, developer platforms, or infrastructure products. You've driven architectural decisions and platform roadmaps.
  • Data Platform Expertise - Deep understanding of data pipeline architecture, ETL processes, data modeling, and real-time data at scale. You discuss database trade-offs, processing frameworks, and performance optimization with architects.
  • Deployment Architecture - Strong knowledge of containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), deployment automation, and cloud vs. on-prem architectural trade-offs.
  • Technical Decision-Making - Lead technical trade-off discussions, make architecture decisions, and drive consensus with engineering teams based on deep technical understanding.

What Sets the Best Candidates Apart

  • Engineer-to-PM - You started as an engineer/data engineer and transitioned to product to drive broader platform strategy while staying deeply technical.
  • Platform Passion - You're passionate about infrastructure that enables other teams. You get excited about data pipelines, deployment architecture, API design, and system scalability.
  • Monolithic-to-Platform - You've evolved monolithic systems into modular, platform-based architectures. You understand service decomposition and building for reusability.
  • Architectural Thinking - You think in systems. You naturally discuss data flow, storage strategies, processing frameworks, deployment models, and how components interact.
  • Decision Ownership - You own tough decisions. You gather input, weigh trade-offs, make the call, and communicate reasoning clearly. Teams trust your judgment.

Reporting & Team Structure

  • Reports to the VP of Product, collaborating with 3 peer Product Managers primarily based in Boulder, CO
  • Works closely with remote based teams: Data Engineering, Platform Engineering, QA, DevOps, and SRE teams on technical development
