Salary: Salaries at Advanced Ionics are paid bi-weekly

Reports to: Vice President of Research and Development
Position Summary: The Electrolyzer Stack Engineer is responsible for designing and building our next-generation stack, cell, and unified electrode assembly architecture. You will also partner with other team members in designing and optimizing bipolar plates and conducting simulations, designing prototypes, and working with manufacturing teams to produce final products.
Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. Days and hours of the work are Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Lead the design and optimization of electrolyzer stacks, with a focus on improving performance, efficiency, durability, and manufacturability.
  • Develop 3D models and perform simulations (e.g., thermal, electrochemical, and mechanical) to validate designs.
  • Collaborate with materials scientists to select and validate components, such as electrolyte materials, electrodes, and interconnects.
  • Evaluate and integrate sealing technologies and thermal management systems
  • Develop and execute test protocols for performance validation and degradation analysis of stack components.
  • Analyze experimental data to correlate it with design parameters and propose iterative improvements.
  • Work closely with other engineers to ensure stack designs integrate seamlessly with balance-of-plant components.
  • Address scale-up challenges for industrial applications, including modular design and mass production considerations.
  • Support the development of technical documentation, such as drawings, specifications, and design standards. Identify opportunities for innovation in electrolyzer stack design and contribute to intellectual property development.

Qualifications

Professional Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience (after education) designing and developing stacks above 25 cm2 in size
  • Built and operated low or high temperature electrolyzer or fuel cell stacks above 25 cm2 in size
  • Proven expertise in designing, prototyping, and scaling up electrolyzer, fuel cell or other systems
  • Experience with electrochemical modeling, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics principles.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion) and simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL).
  • Ability to work with unconventional materials and unorthodox methods, with proven results.
  • Ability to execute design of experiments (DOE) protocols with robust statistics-backed methods.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and certifications related to electrolyzer systems.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes for electrolyzer or fuel cell components, such as laser welding, coatings, forming methods, etc.
  • Preferred: Experience with high-temperature ceramics, advanced coatings, or high-pressure systems
