Description

Position: Electrochemist Scientist

Status: Full-Time, Salaried, Exempt

Reports to: Testing and Development Manager

Position Summary: Electrochemist Scientist is responsible for developing targeted electrochemical methods and techniques for assessing materials, electrolyzer cells, and stacks to improve and advance electrolyzer performance and durability.

This is an opportunity to be very hands-on in a startup R&D lab environment and collaborate with a diverse team of talented and passionate engineers and scientists with a common goal of decarbonizing heavy industry.

Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time, in-person position. Days and hours of the work are Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Design and execute tests to identify methods to improve electrolyzer performance and durability and gain fundamental understanding of underlying mechanisms.
  • Design new materials and optimize existing materials and configurations.
  • Evaluate electrolyzer cell and stack performance and diagnostic data.
  • Report analysis and conclusions to team members and leadership.
  • Develop targeted test protocols focused on components and material evaluation along with performance specifications and validation criteria.
  • Provide guidance on technical direction and feedback for R&D programs.
  • Drive standard tools and processes for use across Development and Testing teams.
  • Mentor and train less senior team members.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest technical and scientific advancements in your field.

Qualifications

Professional Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in science or engineering discipline such as chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials sciences.
  • At least 5 years prior full-time experience in electrolyzer or fuel cell development and testing related field.
  • Strong hand-on laboratory skills.
  • Experience with both solid state and solution electrochemistry.
  • Experience with analysis of catalysis and ion conduction in materials.
  • Knowledgeable of electrochemical methods and techniques including potentiometry, constant current and potential methods, impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.
  • Understanding of fundamentals of polarization and overpotentials.
  • Experience with Python, Matlab, or similar programming tools for modeling and data analysis.
  • Strong spreadsheet and presentation skills.
  • Strong organization and documentation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross functional team.
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a diverse technical team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with solid oxide or molten carbonate cell development and testing.
  • Experience in analytical chemistry and materials test methods such as ICP-MS, XRD, SEM-EDS, gas chromatography, ion chromatography, porosimetry, powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and BET.
  • Experience scaling up and commercializing technology.
